Frequently Asked Questions
When are the tryouts and when does the season begin?
The Men's Cal Poly Water Polo team's season is in the Fall
(September - November). We have 2 weeks of pre-season conditioning
(our "hell week") beginning early September (usually
right after labor day weekend).
The pre-season conditioning is pretty much just a show-up-and-do-your-best
type of conditioning. It is not mandatory because we understand
some players can't be here before summer ends (especially
the freshmen who might not have housing until the dorms
open up), but it is definately recommended as it is a good
way to meet other players early on, and get back in shape.
Does the team play in the offseason (anytime other
than Fall)?
Occasionally we put together a Spring league during April
- May. We usually practice/scrimmage twice a week and compete
in on a tournament-by-tournament basis (we decide as a team
if we go). Keep an eye on our home page,
and join our emailing list for announcements about this
Spring league.
I was MVP at my high school, will this help me
make the team?
It might, but not without more hard work. Remember that
a lot of our team is made up athlete's who were the top
players at their high school too. The best thing
to do is show up at the beginning of the season and put
in a lot of effort, hard work, and show dedication. If you
truely want to play on the team, you will regardless of
your past statistics.
How do I get a scholarship to play water polo at
Cal Poly?
Unfortunately, you can't. Since we aren't an official Cal
Poly team under the Athletic department, we aren't funded
by the school and therefore cannot recruit players. In fact,
all the players pay team dues (varying from season to season)
which pays for equipement, tournament fees, and referee
costs, etc.
